As the news of the disturbances caused yesterday in Mexico hit around the world, we want to ensure our volunteers and friends that our city has not been impacted by violent acts at all.
The events that were unleashed yesterday were committed by members of a drug cartel whose boss was captured in a major operation that took place in Tapalpa, state of Jalisco, about 700 miles from Rio Bravo. The criminals reacted to this with blockades and vehicle burnings in 11 states of the republic, but the country is at peace now. There were blockades on the road to Reynosa but they were cleared quickly by our armed forces. That was the extent of the violence in our area. There has not been any further developments and we do not expect any in Rio Bravo.
Our staff and programs are working normally and the population is going about its business as usual. We are keeping a very close look at the situation and following extra safety rules just in case.
We have a visiting team from Oklahoma and they went about their business as usual: they held a banquet for scholarship students yesterday, crossed the border and are now building their casita as they normally do.
